Group Tour: Cu Chi Tunnels ½ Day
Rubber forest with a lot of traps in the war, Network of tunnels, War documentary film...
If the tenacious spirit of the Vietnamese can be symbolised by a place, few sites are more symbolic than Cu Chi. At first glance there is scant evidence today of the fighting and bombing that convulsed Cu Chi during the war. To see what went on, you have to dig deeper – underground.
The Cu Chi Tunnels are part of a massive war museum in Ho Chi Minh. They offer visitors a sneak-peek at the underground life of Vietnamese soldiers back in 1948. The site has over 120km of underground tunnels, with trapdoors, living areas, kitchens, storage facilities, armoury, hospitals, and command centres. After the war against the French, Vietnamese soldiers expanded the tunnels and included effective air filtration systems, which helped them survive the Cu Chi carpet-bombings.
While the tunnels were used to house civilians as well as troops, they were also used to run supplies and communications. With such a large underground network, this could be accomplished fairly easy.
In terms of military tactics, the tunnels saw a lot of use in the development of boobie traps. Commonly, traps used trip wires and explosives. These trip wires could activate many things, from a simple grenade falling, to stranger things like scorpions and dangerous snakes falling onto the soldiers who activated the wire.
8h30 am: We depart from Ho Chi Minh city to Cu Chi Tunnels for 60km from Ho Chi Minh city. Cu Chi is now considered a heroic district for its role in the anti - American war in Vietnam. It is legendary for its tunnels system of over 220 km and is a popular spot for both Vietnamese and foreigner.
The peacefully rural rice paddy scenery contains ducks and water buffalos swimming in the rivers along the side of road. You will find it hard to imagine the destructions, damage and defoliation all over the area, caused by bombing and mines, when Cu Chi was "A Free Target Zone ".
